Who wants a sneaky peek at my diary of a typical weekend? Part 1: Friday
Hello, and welcome to my diary of a weekend!

A question I get a lot is what I get up to outside of a club, so I thought it’d be good to show a little insight to my world away from Djing, producing, promoting and running a label.

Friday

8:04p.m

Driver Mike has arrived and it’s time for the weekend to begin. When you play a lot of events that are miles apart each week, having a good driver is vital and Mike is easily the best! He’s never got me to a gig late, and even when the sat-nav says we’re 30 mins behind, we still somehow manage to arrive 10 minutes early.

For most people though, Friday evening means a few drinks with friends and a big night out, but for me it’s usually spent mostly on motorways, travelling to gigs, sometimes taking in 3 clubs in one night. Not that I’m complaining, I wouldn’t change it for anything in the world!

8:50p.m

We’re not even an hour in and it’s time for dinner! My food of choice this evening is McDonalds. Which is better though; Maccy D’s or Burger King? An age-old question I’ll never truly know the answer to. After our fast food injection it’s back on the road.

The journey is going well, mainly due to the c.d. selection. Today’s music of choice has been the Cut-Up Boys new Ministry Of Sound album which is truly brilliant.

We’ve arrived in Weymouth! It’s bloody cold and as I’m due on the decks at midnight we don’t have time to go to the hotel. We spend 5 minutes outside the club deciding if a) the clubs open (we eventually realise the entrance to the main part is round the corner) and b) Are we really allowed to park here? We take the gamble.

11:50p.m

Entering the club I’m impressed by the vibe; everyone seems up for it! The DJ that’s on before me is smashing it up and jumping around like a madman, he also happens to be the owner and all-round nice guy; DJ Foggy. I hang by the bar and have some photos with a group of girls and boys in Keep It Whitby outfits; amazing stuff and always brings a huge smile to my face to see such effort!

I step onto the stage and get things rolling. I’ve never mixed into another DJs last record and I don’t intend to start tonight; I believe in winding down, letting the crowd cheer the DJ who’s just finished and then starting with an intro. It lets everyone know that for the next hour or so, I’m in control.

2:03a.m

I finish my set @ 155bpm, with Tom Parr’s ‘Parr-leg’ mashup; a hoover-led thrasher of a track by one of the brightest talents in our scene.

3:00a.m

One of the biggest complaints I get from people is I never stick around after a set, usually because I have to shoot off to another gig. But not tonight, so it’s drinks all round and a catch up with some friends while Mike starts cutting crazy shapes on the dancefloor to impress the ladies. He fails.

4:00a.m

Time to roll back to the hotel, we’ve got to be up in 4hrs; repeating that a few times to myself I curse the world and everyone in it.

4:26a.m

Reaching the hotel after dropping some friends off at theirs, something interesting happens; the promoter has booked me a double bed room. Which would be perfect if driver Mike wasn’t a man. Not to worry, we’re been through worse (don’t ask!)

5:26a.m

One hour since we arrived and I’m still not asleep, trying to catch up with emails on my iPhone (to anyone thinking of getting one; do! It’s amazing), I’m becoming ever aware of how little time I have to sleep before we have to hit the road again.
