This article is about Night Shift @ Mass in London (UK), Sat 20 Oct 2007

New club night is the first in London to look after clubbers hearing

The club scene in London is constantly evolving and changing but one thing unites all clubbers – the music.

Shocking statistics from RNID, the deafness charity, reveal that 90% of young people experience the signs of hearing damage after a night out, yet do nothing to prevent it. The RNID report “Like it Loud” also revealed that 70% of clubbers, 68% of gig-goers and 44% of people who go to bars experience the symptoms of hearing damage after their night out, whcih include dullness of hearing or ringing in the ears.

Night Shift is a new night that is storming into the Hard House scene in London. Following a successful launch party, the night returns to bring London clubbers the night that they have helped create by giving the organisers their feedback about what they do and don’t want from the clubbing experience. When the Night Shift organisers saw the worrying statistics from RNID, they decided to team up with the Don’t Lose the Music Campaign to bring awareness of how hearing can be protected without ruining the clubbing experience.

Andy Gee, Director at Celestial Events organisers of Night Shift commented “Night Shift had to be different to stand out in a busy but niche market. We spoke to our customers and listened to what they wanted to have at their ideal party and we have taken everything they said on board. We also looked at what is going on within the scene and looked at how to make sure everyone felt safe and comfortable.

From a young age I have experienced hearing problems, and I am partially deaf in my right ear. So, when the opportunity arose to team up with the RNID to promote safe listening within the clubbing scene, I thought it was a great idea.

We are delighted that RNID’s Don’t Lose The Music campaign has teamed up with Night Shift to help bring hearing awareness to a new generation of clubbers. On the night, all clubbers will be handed a goody bag that will contain a number of items linked to the event including a pair of ear plugs and information on how to protect their hearing.”

Emma Harrison, Head of Campaigns, RNID, said: "We're all familiar with messages about practising safe sex and using suncream – but the lack of any guidance on loud music means this generation of music lovers could be facing a hearing loss timebomb. Our research shows most young people have experienced the first signs of permanent hearing damage after a night out, yet have no idea how to prevent it. With regular exposure to music at high volumes in clubs, gigs and bars, it's only too easy to clock up noise doses that could damage their hearing forever."

Thanks hon, I think the most interesting conversation I had was with two memebers of staff who were working that night, it was the first time they had ever worn earplugs whilst working and said how brilliant it was, they could still hear everything perfectly - if not slightly clearer.
