HISTORY

1978 saw the opening of Crocs, a night-club which was regarded by many as a landmark in alternative music history. Opening its doors at the height of disco fever, Crocs chose a much more underground path to tread, offering a safe haven for those who wanted to embrace the music of Joy Division, The Teardrop Explodes and Souxsie and the Banshees as well as promoting the concept of an alternative dress code.

Although it wasn’t until the early eighties that Crocs really came into it’s own offering a regular venue for the growing number of New Romantics, who would travel from all over the country to be seen drinking alongside the likes of Depeche Mode, Spandau Ballet and Culture Club and many others. All of these artists used Crocs as the perfect place to showcase their live shows, often showcasing their stage routine before going on nationwide tours to much larger concert halls.

From the early to mid eighties under its new venue name, The Pink Toothbrush, Crocs would remain faithful to the alternative music scenes, playing host and providing home to the sounds of Goth, Psychobilly, Northern Soul, Hip-hop and Acid house. It wasn’t until the very end of the 1980's, when another alternative revolution was being looked, and the clubbers were waiting to find another great band after The Smiths untimely demise.

1989 saw the rise of a music which embraced dance music and fused it with indie guitars, and turned the Toothbrush dance floor into an army of Bez', all open mouthed, wide eyed, with hands banging in the air to the sounds of The Happy Mondays, the Stone Roses and 808 State. It was then in this sudden flurry of indie madness that The Toothbrush Appointed Saturdays the Indie-Dance night and Fridays would cater for Alternative Music on a wider spectrum. A popular move this, as it has remained this way to the present day, maintaining a constant interest in playlisting new and interesting alternative music.
